Terrorists from Malaysia is dead

Police basked in the limelight Thursday, after a nine-year manhunt ended for the region’s most wanted terrorist (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead)  following a raid on a house in Surakarta, Central Java.

“Alhamdulillah [praise God],” National Police Chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said.

Noordin M. Top (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead), a Malaysian national, was among four suspected terrorists killed in the raid in Jebres in the early hours of Thursday morning.

“We have conducted fingerprint tests and we have also crosschecked them with the Malaysian police and we can confirm that the body belongs to number one terrorist fugitive Noordin Mohammad Top (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead),” he said to the sound of applause at a press conference.

“I am deeply appreciative of my boys [referring to police force], who worked hard, who did not think of looking for promotions, who could not return home” during the intense operations, he said.

Displaying photos of Noordin’s (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead) fingerprints he said 14 points matched between the body and data provided by the Malaysian police.

Another top suspect and fellow Malaysian national Azahari Husin (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead), was shot by police in a raid in late 2005.

Police suffered a blow when reports prematurely announced that Noordin was killed in a raid in Temanggung, Central Java, on Aug. 8 — the body had been falsely identified.

Noordin, one of the most senior al-Qaeda operatives in Southeast Asia (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead), according to Bambang, was wanted for involvement in numerous terrorist attacks including blasts in Bali, at the Philippine Ambassadors residents and, most recently, the July 17 attacks on the Ritz-Carlton and JW Marriott hotels in Jakarta.

The raid in Surakarta was the latest in a series of attempts to apprehend suspects allegedly responsible for July’s bombings, the first terrorist attacks on Indonesian soil since the second Bali bombings in 2005.

The police announcement comes ahead of a planned visit to the region by US president Barack Obama in November.

Although Noordin was the chief target of their operation, police were quick to say they would continue to track down his accomplices.

Syarifudin Zuhri bin Jaelani Irsyad, who allegedly recruited the bombers for the July attacks, and Muhammad Syahrir, who is suspected to have built a network of operatives within the aircraft industry, are among the fugitives still at large.

Gen. Bambang chastised local residents for failing to report the fugitives to police, despite previous moves to urge the public to be on the look out for suspicious behavior and strangers in their midst.

“There was a woman on Metro TV who said she knew the suspect kept to himself, but regretfully she didn’t go further.

“That house had up to 200 kilograms of explosives in it,” he said. Two pipe bombs, a hand grenade, a gun, a rifle, two laptops, surveillance kits and a pile of documents were also found.

About six months ago, Noordin and his (Terrorists from Malaysia is dead) accomplices stayed in a different house in Kepuhsari village, Jebres, rented by a man named Susilo.

Bambang added police had also identified three other men killed in yesterday’s raid: Bagus Budi Pranoto, alias Urwah, one of Noordin’s top accomplices, Ario Sudarso, alias Aji, and Hadi Susilo, alias Adib.

Police also arrested Susilo’s wife, Putri Munawaroh, who was shot in the leg. She was taken to the Police Hospital in East Jakarta for treatment. Bambang said Urwah and Aji were known as the group’s bomb makers, and were trained directly by the late Azahari.

Praising the police, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono renewed calls for a global fight on terrorism, saying that apart from religious extremism, a root cause was the sense of injustice, induced by poverty, and wars perceived to be unjust. However, with the death of the key figures, he said, “I believe we could reduce the seriousness of the terror threat to Indonesia.”
